Why Geothermal Exchange? Why Energy Exchange?

Environmental Friendliness along with Financial Savings

As we face the challenges of the future, it is critical to look at the problems that we face today, and to extend the directions that we see happening.  There are two problems relating to the heating/cooling field that we are being forced to consider - one old, one newer:

  • Financial Cost - the cost of heating and cooling our homes and businesses has always been a significant factor.  At some periods the cost has been in time and personal energy; at others (like the present) it has tended to be in financial outlay.  As our dependence on petroleum based fuels continues to increase, it is a virtual certainty that the cost is going to continue to rise, and that if we remain dependent on the old style systems, a greater portion of our income will be devoted that way.
  • Environmental Cost - The greenhouse gas effect.  It is documented and is a problem that we are facing globally.  The more petroleum we burn, the more we're contributing to it.  Quite simply, we must take steps to reduce the amount of non-renewable energy that we use.

Many of the choices that we make pit Financial Cost against Environmental Cost.  If something is good for the environmental picture, it often carries with it a price tag, either in actual dollars or in personal comfort.

Enter Geo-Thermal Exchange heating and cooling.  In a nutshell, the geo-thermal exchange process is a type of solar heating and cooling, but it is far more functional than solar collectors and the like.  The sun gives us a tremendous amount of energy, but just when we want to heat, the strength of the sun's rays drop off, and when we want to cool, well....  One of our challenges is to reverse that heating/cooling process that the sun generates, and make it work for us.  Something that we've used for years is to take heat from somewhere where we don't want or need it, and move it to somewhere that we do,  is the process of refrigeration.  The geo-thermal exchange heat pump is really a big, reversible refrigerator.  When our homes or businesses are too hot, the heat is removed and carried down into the earth, using the soil as a huge heat sink.  Then, when our homes need heat, the refrigeration process is reversed, and the heat is moved from the earth and back to our homes.

The absolutely huge advantage of geo-thermal exchange is that it does not mean a choice between financial or comfort costs and environmental ones.  It is one of the few technologies that is good for both.  Operating costs of a geo-thermal exchange system are SIGNIFICANTLY lower than for a comfort comparable petroleum and/or electrical based heating/cooling system.   A well designed energy exchange system can provide many, many years of trouble free comfort - all at a cost of operation that will save thousands of dollars over its lifetime.  It is with virtual certainty destined to become one of the big players in the future that begins today.
